PAA Takes Preventive Measures Against Coronavirus/COVID-19

March 14, 2020

What a Difference a Day (or two) Makes...

At Parkinson Association of Alberta, the health and safety of our clients has always been, and continues to be, our number one priority.  As we mentioned on Wednesday (2020-03-11) we have been closely monitoring the Coronavirus/COVID-19 situation. On Thursday new developments arose here in Alberta and across the country; including (but not limited to) the likelihood of the number of cases increasing significantly over the next few weeks. This led us to conduct discussions and consultations with healthcare professionals and others in our industry.

Taking these discussions and new Government of Alberta recommendations into consideration Parkinson Association of Alberta has implemented preventive measures which are outlined below along with important information to help us stay connected, and a recap of how to prevent and prepare.

Again, we do want to stress that the current public health risk in Alberta is low; however, with the increased risk to the majority of our Parkinson's population (over 65, chronic health condition, compromised

immune systems) we want to ensure we are doing our part to keep YOU, our staff, stakeholders and our communities at-large healthy and safe.

We will continue to keep a close eye on the situation as it unfolds and stay nimble in our ability to make decisions and address issues as they arise.

Starting this Monday (2020-03-16) and continuing through (at least) the next 30 days, Parkinson Association of Alberta has:

  • Suspended all in-person Support Groups and group programs
    -  We strongly suggest that clients temporarily stop attending group activities (including exercise and social groups) they may be taking part in to limit exposure

    -  Refunds will be available for paid programming being cancelled, however, credit for your next PAA program sessions is also being offered as an alternative
  • Suspended visits to group living facilities (long-term care, seniors residences, etc)
  • Cancelled all planned in-person speaking and social engagements (including speaker series, education sessions, lunches, etc)

While we navigate these challenging circumstances with everyone's health and safety in mind; rest assured we will continue to be available to support YOU - - our clients and their families.

  • We will focus our efforts on reaching out to our clients by phone and email to provide information and support, and offer encouragement, tips and tricks to stay motivated and active.
  • Our Staff will continue to work during their regularly scheduled office hours
  • Our Calgary and Edmonton Offices will remain open and Client Services Staff will be available for scheduled one-on-one/family session
  • Our toll-free Parkinson's line (1-877-243-9992) is available Monday through Friday from 8:30AM - 4:00PM (CLICK HERE for info)
  • Our monthly Tele-Support Group will also continue (CLICK HERE for info)
  • We will continue to provide relevant content via our website, weekly e-updates and social media
  • We are also working on ideas for use of video technology for education opportunities (speakers, presentations)
