Getting Older Adults Outdoors (GO-Out) Study

The University of Alberta and the Edmonton Bone and Joint Centre are looking for volunteers to participate in a study to improve the ability of older adults to walk outdoors.  This study is being conducted by a group of physical therapists, geriatricians and researchers from the University of Alberta and other academic centres across Canada and is intended to evaluate two programs designed to help older adults to walk outside more easily.

Who is eligible to participate in the study?

You are eligible to participate in this study if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • You are 65 or older
  • You have difficulties walking outdoors
  • You walk outdoors less than 75 minutes per week

What is required of the participants?

Participants will be randomly placed into one of two groups and each will receive a step counter and a $20 gift card.  Your participation will involve:

  • one, two (2) hour interactive workshop and lunch (in Edmonton)
  • four (4) sessions at the Bone and Joint Clinic (Edmonton) over a one-year period
  • using a step-counter
  • the potential to be a part of a 10-week outdoor walking program
