Study in Parkinson Disease of Exercise Phase 3 Clinical Trial (SPARX3)

The University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry are seeking volunteers to participate in a research study to learn more about the effects of aerobic exercise on people with Parkinson disease.

SPARX3 is a research study to learn more about the effects of aerobic exercise on people with Parkinson disease who have not yet started medication for their Parkinson’s.  It will compare the effects of moderate intensity treadmill exercise to high intensity treadmill exercise on the signs and symptoms of Parkinson disease.

Who is eligible to participate in the study?

  • People diagnosed with Parkinson disease
    • Who are between the ages of 40 – 80
    • Who have been diagnosed within the last three (3) years
    • Who are NOT yet taking medication for Parkinson’s symptoms
    • Who do NOT plan to start taking medication for Parkinson’s within the next six (6) months
    • Who are NOT already participating in a structured exercise program

What is required of the participants?

  • Be able to travel to the University of Alberta periodically for study related visits
  • Be able and willing to participate in study visits for 24 months
  • Be able and willing to do moderate to high intensity exercise on a treadmill 4x/week for 18 months
    • Either at home, at the U of A or at a Gym (financial assistance may be available to help with this)
  • Receive a physical examination (including a blood test and fitness test) and exercise prescription
