Parkinson Research Study

This research aims to determine if muscle activity can be used to detect/diagnose Parkinson’s disease earlier & track its progression better. Overall, this project may contribute to the development of a “biomarker” to improve the lives of those living with Parkinson’s disease.

Who is eligible to participate in the study?

Healthy adults as well as individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. This includes individuals at early or advanced stages of the disease & individuals with or without an implanted deep brain stimulator. Participants need to be able to move their foot up & down when asked. If you are unsure if you are eligible to participate, please don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Afsharipour at 780-407-1559 or afsharip@ualberta.ca

What is required of the participants?

Participants will need to come to the Heritage Medical Research Centre for the experiment. During the experiment, you will need to lift your foot up & down while we record muscle activity from your leg using a sticker-like sensor. This process is pain-free & non-invasive. Note that we may need to shave some leg hair in order to properly attach the sensor. If you have Parkinson’s disease, you will need to refrain from taking your levodopa medication for 12 hours prior to arrival. If you are a healthy adult, participation will take 1 hour. If you have Parkinson’s disease without deep brain stimulation, it will take 2 hours. If you have Parkinson’s disease with deep brain stimulation, it may take approximately 4 hours.
